Program Characteristics

Q: How long will it take to complete the Executive MBA program?
A: The Executive MBA program takes 21 months to complete

Q: How many credit hours are required of Executive MBA students?
A: The program is 48 credit hours.

Q: How is the program format structured?
A: Classes are held once a week, alternating Fridays and Saturdays. Class days are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program also includes two intensive weeks at an off-site location and a 10-12 day international field study.

Q: When can I begin the Executive MBA program?
A: The Executive MBA program begins in August.

Tuition and Fees

Q: What is the cost of the Executive MBA program?
A: The total cost of the Executive MBA Program for the Class of 2016 (beginning August 2014) is $78,000. The total cost includes the following:

  • Tuition and fees for the entire 21-month program
  • Laptop computer
  • Tablet (Ipad)
  • Parking permits
  • Books and course materials (includes a subscription to the Wall Street Journal)
  • International Field Study (excluding meals)
  • Two intensive weeks at an off-site location
  • Catered dining services (breakfast, lunch, and snack)
  • Administrative Services (registration, billing, grades, etc.)
  • Additional networking, partner/spouse, and family event

Payments are made in five equal installments due at the beginning of each semester. A $2,000 non-refundable deposit is required upon acceptance to the program and is applied toward the first semester tuition payment. The first tuition installment must be paid before August 1, 2014 to confirm a position in the class and to receive an Executive MBA laptop. Deposit and all tuition paid are non-refundable.

Q: What is the admissions deposit and when is it due?
A: Upon notification of acceptance to the EMBA program, a non-refundable deposit of $2000 is required to indicate intent to register. This $2000 will reserve the student's seat in the entering class and is applied toward the first semester tuition payment. Information about the deposit and payment due date will be included with the acceptance letter.

Q: Is financial aid available to Executive MBA students?
A: Yes. There are sources of financial aid available to meet the needs of Executive MBA students, including Stafford Federal loans and private loans through the University of Utah. For more information please visit the Financing Your EMBA section of our website.

Q: How do I apply for the Executive MBA program?
A: The entire Executive MBA application process can be completed online through our website. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact our office at (801)581-5577. The application is available online, and you can apply by filling out our online application.

Q: When are your application deadlines?
A: The Executive MBA program uses a rolling admissions process. We will evaluate completed applications as they are received. Therefore, there is an added benefit to those applicants who apply early. The application process will remain open until all the seats are full. Learn more about our Application Submission Priority dates.

Q: What are the requirements to apply to the Executive MBA program?
A: Your applications will be complete once the following items are submitted:

  1. Executive MBA Admissions Application
    • Essay
    • Resume
    • Official Hardcopy Transcripts
    • Recommendation Form and Nomination Letter
    • Application Fee
  2. Official GMAT Score (waiver is granted in certain cases)
  3. Interview with Program Director

Q: How much weight is placed on the various elements of the application?
A: The admissions committee takes a look at the full application package. All components of the application are important.

Q: Do you have a required minimum work experience?
A: Yes. Executive MBA applicants must have 6 years post-undergraduate work experience in order to gain acceptance into the program.

Q: What are the topics of the essay questions and how long should the essays be?
A: Please write a one page essay responding to the following topics.

  • Explain your decision and motivation for applying to the MBA program
  • Why you feel you are a strong candidate for the MBA program
  • How will getting an MBA influence your career intentions

The essay is to be single-spaced, typed, and may not exceed one page.

OPTIONAL ESSAY: What other information about you is important in considering your application? (If a GPA is below a 3.0, the David Eccles School of Business must appeal to the University of Utah on behalf of the applicant. These applicants are strongly encouraged to address their GPAs in this essay)

Q: Is an interview required for admission?
A: Yes. Once your completed application is received, you will be contacted for an interview. The interview helps assess your skills and motivation and allows for additional character insight as part of the admission process.

Q: How many students are accepted into the program?
A: We estimate a class size of 55-65 students.

Q: Do you accept transfer credit hours?
A: No. The Executive MBA program does not accept graduate transfer credits from other programs or institutions.
